DAY 1: Arrival on night bus to Ha Giang town then get pick up and after some breakfast, we go out on ‘Road of Happiness’ and start driving north out of Ha Giang town. Today’s ride will keep us on the road for some 111 km. We pass the Heaven’s Gate and the Fairy Hills and through the small town of Tam Son. Our lunch will be in the village of Trang Kim. Then we venture deep into the Ha Giang mountains and reach Du Gia. Here we will stay with an ethnic minority family, the Tay, at their homestay. We will have dinner and breakfast with the family.
Day 2: If it is a warm day we may opt to take a morning swim in the river. At around 9.30 heading 92km north, passing some of the most magnificent mountain passes you will ever have seen, pass the town of Meo Vac and you are moving up the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass before reaching Dong Van. Here you will be staying your night in either Hotel or hostel. Maybe a Hot Pot for dinner?!
Day 3: If we are waking up on a Sunday in Dong Van the weekly really big local market meet you before or after a breakfast. More ethnic minority groups than you can count have travelled on Saturday or extremely early on Sunday to reach here. Really colourful and people from near and far to do their weekly shopping and gossiping. After breakfast we start a 152km day and go first to the North pole. Anyway, that is what the most northern point of Vietnam is jokingly called – Lung Cu. We can climb the Lung Cu Flagpole and view Chine from the top, then we turn north. We travel down the Highland of Stone and reach Yen Minh where we take lunch and then we go through pine forests with stunning rice terraced fields surrounding us, travel through the beautiful Mein river valley, and we are back in Tam Son and travel the same road back to Ha Giang which we reach at around 5.30pm then take over night sleeper bus back to Hanoi. Arrive in Hanoi bus station tour finish. You have to take the taxi back to hostel by your own.
